Hair Loss During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the time of transition and possibility-but it is also the time of great changes in your body and mind. There are lots of changes including skin, hair, and nails during pregnancy. All of these are normal, and most of them go away after pregnancy. You may notice changes in the texture and growth your hair and nails during pregnancy.

Some women report that both grow faster and are stronger; others report hair falling out and nails splitting. Hair changes during pregnancy are normal but these changes are temporary. Most women will lose some hair after delivery. In time, your hair and nails will return to the way they were before the pregnancy.

Changes during pregnancy:
During pregnancy, an increased number of hairs go into the resting phase, which is part of the normal hair loss cycle. This condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, and should begin to diminish within 3-4 months after delivery.

If you feel that you are experiencing unusual hair loss while you are pregnant, this may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency. During pregnancy, it is believed that high estrogen levels extend the “anagen” or growth phase of the hair, while slowing down the “telogen” or resting phase to where hair that would normally have been shed continues to rest. This explains why some expectant mothers experience thicker, more luxurious hair, while others find that their previously manageable hair is growing totally out of control.

Depending on your personal genetic makeup, during pregnancy your oil-producing glands may either speed up or slow down production in accordance with your hormonal changes—causing otherwise straight hair to suddenly become wavy or previously dry hair to now be oily.

Take advantage of products that help promote healthy hair growth, such as thickening shampoos, conditioning treatments, and essential oils. If you have grown used to using a certain type of shampoo, you may need to change to one that fits your hair type during pregnancy.

It may take some experimenting, but use the one that is best-suited to the current condition of your hair. A healthy diet goes a long way with the condition of your skin and the promotion of healthy hair growth. Opt for a new hair style and do not worry hair changes in pregnancy is normal. These changes will go away after you deliver your baby. So have a healthy pregnancy!
